When we have been heard few years ago about Smoothies for the first time, people frequently asked me what do I think about new boom - Green smoothies? To nearly all of them I did explain that this is an excellent facilitator of the raw food movement - therefore is very good, but it is not good version of food “eating”, that we already have the best possible version: optimal food diet. A few Canadians asked me if I know Canadian raw foodist Patenoude, that he promotes smoothies with all his passion all the time.
I answered them that I don’t know him personally, but either cannot agree with him (if he does so). Today I have got the 97th e-mail with the same question, question about Green Smoothies and therefore I decided to explain it to all who are interested for the subject, why Green Smoothies are not a good examples of raw food “eating” – drinking.
When they use blender and blending fruits and greens, vegetables, bottled
water together to make a Green Smoothie, people think they have a quick great meal which anybody can enjoy, even because they think that is correct, because there is no added "fat", and it helps to drink greens, which are often not appealing in other forms; also the greens in a Green Smoothie are also broken down and easily digestible, and the nutrients are easy to assimilate. In spite of their “advantages” Green Smoothies are not as perfect as some people imagine. In fact, in many circumstances they are not the ideal food even they are in its’ raw state.
As we all know (except systems' educated experts), we human beings are frutarians, frugivors - the creatures which are anatomically, physiologically and biologically adopted for fruits – fruit eating creatures as a “man from the wood” (oran gutan), baboons and some other humanoid apes are. It means that fruits are very important for us, not vegetables. We could live in good health for many years just on fruit (I did it for the period of first 1,5 years of my 19 years raw lifestyle) but it would be impossible to do the same on vegetables - greens.

If someone who really is on optimal diet regime, would try to prepare and to drink let us say Banana-spinach-berry-bottled or tap water Smoothie, would have serious digestive problems, indigestion, fermentation in all digestive tract (as she/he would eat cooked food) with gases and as a consequence very bad absorption because of false combination of fruit and vegetables and at the same time someone would not get enough of "fuel".
The first important personality who made a mistake mixing fruits and vegetables was Dr. Walker who I admired very much, but I also noticed in 1995 when I read his book that he was wrong. And the same mistake does some new day’s raw foodists or better to say: raw food vegans - smoothie lovers.
Vegetables – greens certainly are important factor in the optimal diet regime, but not mixing with fruits. Some 20 – 15% of optimal diet regime must contain vegetables – greens, the best way eaten in the form of salad – not blended in blender.
If someone think that she/he needs something green to drink, there is a very special recipe with the best possible drink for recuperation after training, which I use occasionally (few times a year), when I do not have time to prepare vegetable juice, since 1995:
- Put in glass of blender chopped spinach, dandelion, alfalfa and green leafy lettuce till it is full (content of one liter).
- Add 2 dl of coconut water
- Add one big or 2 smaller avocados
- Add two - three cloves of garlic
- Blending it and drink it immediately after preparation.
With this recuperation blender mixing drink and one bowl of green leafy mixed salad you will satisfy all body needs vegetables and greens contains. I prepare it when I travel, because everyone has blender but very few of them has juicer :). Such kind of drink (it is not smootie) could be an excellent solution for the people who eat everything - all kind of foods as they think they are omnivores (systems' educated experts told this to them), because they do not eat sufficient amount of vegetables.
We can drink it as an option, but do remember that a big bowl of mixing green leafy salad is the best option, the second best option is to prepare vegetable juice, third and the last best version is recuperation drink from the blender I described.
